ROLES
When in Ephes...
POLITICS
POLITICS
✘ Characters join the Senate as external advisors from faraway lands, to support the campaigns and endeavours of a handful of politicians representing the interests of common men.
✘ Characters receive papers and recommendation letters attesting their great oratorial and political skills, as exercised abroad.
✘ Their benefactors expect them to be well learned, mannered and (publicly) supportive of their patron and of the people said patron represents.
✘ They may take residence as a guest in their benefactor's splendid abode.
RATONHNHAKE:TON | CONNOR
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Senator Gnaeus Aemilius, representing the artists and musicians of Ephes. Like his protegees, Gnaeus Aemilius is theatrical, given to extremes of temperament and swayed by ideals of Justice, Truth and Beauty.
RESOURCES
Unlike his protegees, Gnaeus Aemilius is independently wealthy and may provide a steady flow of 5,000 gold pieces (~$10,000) each month for Connor's work expenses. Connor can also call upon the services, knowledge and influence of 30 notable painters, sculptors and musicians, and 20 actors — who can typically enter or get audiences with the higher echelons of Ephes.
DAENERYS
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Iulius Lepidus, representing sailors, fishermen and transport workers. A former general of the navy, Iulius Lepidus understands the practicalities faced by the people he represents and has a fair, temperate disposition.
RESOURCES
Between commerce, then navy and the thriving fishermen's sector, this is a fairly large segment of the population to represent, and Daenerys accordingly receives 8,000 gold pieces (~$16,000) per month for work expenses. She can call upon individual sailors and navy officers for information from the sea or bureaucratic information, while fishermen carry good city gossip.
JON SNOW
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Cornelia Flavia, representing the city guards of Ephes. A stern and duty-bound widow, Cornelia Flavia accepted the responsibility after the death of her husband, but has little political experience and gives Jon nearly complete autonomy in decision-making.
RESOURCES
Jon receives a mere 3,000 gold pieces (~$6,000) a month for his work expenses, but a handsome network of city watchmen and guards at nearly every citadel post, happy to do small favours or eavesdrop on Jon's behalf, as long as they are not caught. At least jail breaks should be simpler this time around.
WRATH
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Lucilla Quinta, representing bankers, tax collectors and creditors. A woman of numbers and sharp business acumen, Lucilla Quinta doesn't care how Wrath does his job, as long as she and the people she represents get the best deal.
RESOURCES
Wrath receives an overwhelming 12,000 gold coins (~$24,000) for his monthly work expenses. Bankers and creditors can offer information on just who in the citadel is in the red — and Wrath can also leverage the long-term financial interests of bankers to warm people his way.
ANTHONY LOCKWOOD
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by elder Aulus Faltonius, representing the lawyers and public servants of Ephes. A former judge himself, Aulus Faltonius is scrupulous about doing everything by the book and does not abide
opendishonesty.RESOURCES
Lockwood receives 4,000 gold pieces (~$8,000) for his work expenses each month, but free legal representation
for the inevitable imprisonments. He can also call upon lawyers or public servants to falsify passport or commercial papers, or dig out information from the citadel's libraries and archives.STEPHEN STRANGE
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Titus Sulpicius, representing magicians and magical buskers — an accepted class of Ephes, looked down upon for their 'crass' and 'juvenile' talents. Titus Sulpicius is openly derisive of the people he represents and only accepted this assignment in hopes of stepping up the political ladder. He gives Stephen free rein.
RESOURCES
Stephen receives a mere 1,500 gold pieces (~$3,000) each month for his work expenses, but the too-long underestimated class of Ephes' magicians is always eager to use its vast array of supernatural skills for their patron.
BEITANG MORAN
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Ulpius Mallius, representing the priests and temples of Ephes. Decades ago, Ulpius Mallius served as Senate leader and de facto head priest, only to fall so in love with priesthood that he retired from political life. He believes in atonement, modesty, kindness and chastity.
RESOURCES
Unlike Ulpius Mallius, the people he represents believe in accepting numerous earthly donations for sacred causes and make a monthly 10,000 gold pieces (~$20,000) available for Beitang Moran's work expenses. Regrettably, they only have information about temple life.
SU XUNXIAN
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Marcus Statilius, representing the farmers of Ephes. Himself a farmer grown to means, Marcus Statilius is the rare honest man who truly only entered politics to help represent his own kind. Practical and stalwart, he will not oppose measures that support farmers.
RESOURCES
Farming is key to Ephes' growth, and Su Xunxian can therefore count on 8,000 gold pieces (~$16,000) per month for work expenses. While farmers largely reside outside of Ephes, they can help with sanctuary, if you ever need an urgent hiding place outside of the citadel. They can also provide horses.
LAN XICHEN
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Aquilia Longina, representing merchants and jewellers. Above all, Aquilia Longina values the long game and wants Lan Xichen to keep everyone buttered, friendly and on the side.
RESOURCES
A step below bankers, merchants nevertheless support Lan Xichen with a fine 8,500 gold pieces (~$17,000) for his monthly work expenses. They can also offer access to exotic and rare supplies and a channel to flow gossip throughout the citadel.
ANDUIN WRYNN
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Vipsania Marcella, representing healers, teachers and herbalists. A former concubine of a Senate leader whose enemies often died under mysterious circumstances and suspicion of poison, Vipsania Marcella has few qualms about authorising Anduin to do whatever it takes for the people they represent.
RESOURCES
Anduin receives a mere 4,000 golden coins (~$8,000) for his monthly work expenses, but may count on healing services, and access to the private health information of noblemen, as well as to obscure knowledge that teachers may unearth. If poisoning ever becomes a concern or necessity, drop Vipsania Marcella a word...
WRATHION
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Procula Avita, representing widows, orphans and war veterans. A widow herself, Procula Avita learned early to fight for every opportunity and advantage and cunningly weaponised her charm and beauty to retain a high status even without the support of matrimony. She expects Wrathion to be shrewd and cunning.
RESOURCES
Procula Avita often draws on the guilt, good will and desperate need to be seen as generous of Ephes' nobility and its rising politicians. Wrathion can therefore count on a fair 5,000 gold pieces (~$10,000) for his monthly work expenses, and a great deal of begrudging cooperation whenever he asks nobility to see something done or answered for the good of women and children.
WEN KEXING
REPRESENTATION
Patroned by Servius Flaccus, representing wine and opium sellers and pleasure houses. A high-born man with few earthly appetites, Servius Flaccus nevertheless believes the people he represents deserve fair treatment and work conditions, and less public discrimination. He expects Wen Kexing to treat their protegees with dignity and sincerity.
RESOURCES
Wen Kexing receives a monthly 4,000 gold pieces (~$8,000) for his monthly expenses, as Servius Flaccus refuses to ask a greater fee of the people he represents. Still, wine and opium sellers, as well as the servants and workers of pleasure houses, hear a great deal of information and can delicately ask a bit more, from their noble patrons or their households.
GLADIATORS
GLADIATORS
✘ Characters are brought into the arena as enslaved captives from Ephes' recent conquests or professional gladiators from abroad, seeking to make their mark in the citadel (player's choice).
✘ The keeper of the main gladiatorial arena is Laetio, who imposes a strict training regimen, preparing fighters for teamed or solo combat against demonic beasts, magic or each other.
✘ Above all, gladiators are expected to put on a show, meaning you may need to throw a fight or dramatically extend one to gain public approval.
✘ The crowds idolize well-performing gladiators and take guidance from them on what to eat, wear, or even how to vote.
✘ Gladiators reside in the barracks and are very seldom allowed out. Popular fighters receive invitations to noblemen's fetes, as well as luxurious gifts from their adoring fans.
MO RAN
PERSONA
'The Heavenly Pillar,' 'He Who Skewers the Heavens' — the only renown spear fighter who only ever seems to carry a spear into the arena, while fighting with a sword.
STATUS
A handsome young man with a disturbing number of young girls for his adoring fans. They expect him to act mercifully, nobly and elegantly. Booed by some crowds for being 'a pretty boy.' Receives a wealth of fan mail and dainty gifts. Laetio often instructs Mo Ran's enemies in the arena to make sure not to harm his face.
EMILIA
PERSONA
'The Fury,' 'The Little Death' — renown as a vicious witch who revives her enemies only to kill them again...!
STATUS
A celebrated show-stopper. Laetio keeps her appearances for only the finest performances and charges top coin for her performances. The arena is heavily warded ahead of her fights to prevent magic from oozing out into the stands. She is dressed in all black for her performances and made up in stark, dark colours to resemble a fury. Some say she embodies the Chained God.
XIE YUN
PERSONA
'The Lone Wolf' — a young man who embodies the spirit of a godly animal, believed to be an ancestral wolf.
STATUS
He is given a wide berth in the barracks, as Laetio and other gladiators speculate he is feral and could at any point go berserk. Rumour says he has torn up other gladiators with his mere fangs and claws! Laetio dresses him in furs for his performances and tends to have him appear during evening games. He is encouraged to howl at astral bodies and exaggeratedly portray animal, especially lupine behaviors.
BENEDICT FOX
PERSONA
'The Holy Man' — a man modesty and piety, who supposedly dedicates his victories to the god who speaks to him alone.
STATUS
Kind, mannered and gentle priest of a barbaric or lost religion that Ephes finds at once unimportant and exotic. Believed to exude an aura of contentment. Several other gladiators come to him with questions of the life beyond. The only gladiator to receive a regular and gradually increasing donation from the temple guilds.
BUCKY BARNES
PERSONA
'The Tired Man,' 'The Grandfather' — the ancient soul of a war veteran, reincarnated in the youthful flesh of a gladiator.
STATUS
Believed to house the spirit of an old general who once stood against Ephes, now returned for retribution for his demise at war. He gets a mixed reception from (fellow?) war veterans who spectate gladiator battles — some clap for his alleged war experience, others boo his enmity of Ephes. He receives the choicest cuts during meals and the finest accommodations in the gladiator barracks, on account of his 'age.' Other gladiators often volunteer to make themselves of service to the old Grandfather .

THE HAND
THE HAND
✘ The highly disciplined professional army of Ephes, 50,000 strong and broken into five 'Finger' contingents and based in the outskirts of Ephes. They diligently guard the Hives agricultural clusters.
✘ Members are conscripts and former slaves earning their freedom or career soldiers. They are heavily hazed, isolated and indoctrinated into the cult-like beliefs of the Hand, who heed their 'Brother' Narula religiously.
✘ Characters will be quickly taught the hand and verbal codes of the army and told to distrust 'weak' strangers.
✘ They find they are kept on the perpetual cusp of discomfort: offered clothes that are nearly too flimsy for the weather, rations that fall just a smidge short of satisfying hunger, rest hours that could be 30 minutes longer.
✘ Recruits that fail to meet their performance metrics in practice and assessments often... disappear.

MESSALINA
MESSALINA
✘ Previously unknown, Lady Messalina and her faction of undead and high-level magicians ask the Senate of Ephes to hand over the armies of the Hand so that she might free enslaved undead elsewhere. In exchange, she offers Ephes all the territories she conquers from the undead Brotherhood and its ally, Matthias.
✘ Messalina advocates for peaceful distance between the living and the undead. She owns territories farther south where the undead may retreat, if they cannot coexist with the living.
✘ The Lady's forces are minimally hierarchic and reside outside of Ephes, occupying — with the Senate's blessing — some of the summer villas held by senators, while the Senate considers her proposal. Characters may reside here.
✘ Accustoming to local habits, Messalina holds regular dinners and parties that are less attended because of general hesitations about sharing spaces with the dead. Her living and living-passing emissaries are accepted in Ephes' high society.
✘ Party members infiltrate Messalina's couterie by passing for the advisors and political experts she recruited from abroad to help with her lawful campaign to gain the Senate's support. She is open — and tasks her supporters — to coax, bribe and even blackmail as due to gain the necessary votes to secure her army.
✘ All characters in Messalina's service may optionally have an escort of up to two sentient and speaking hell hounds while carrying out the Lady's objectives.

CIVILIAN OCCUPATIONS
CIVILIAN OCCUPATIONS
✘ Characters are supplied passport papers and either a recommendation or the resources to enter their occupation of choice.
✘ The Merchant pays for their board in one of the civilian districts and provides a monthly stipend of 500 gold pieces (~$1,000) for personal expenses.
✘ While civilian roles have less starting advantage in politics or military, characters can go in and out largely unnoticed and can interact with any of the other classes easily. Your unquestionable asset is discreet information gathering and liaising. They can also put a good word in to earn a crowd's support of whatever motions the politicians currying votes need passed.
