THE HAND
THE HAND
✘ The highly disciplined professional army of Ephes, 50,000 strong and broken into five 'Finger' contingents and based in the outskirts of Ephes. They diligently guard the Hives agricultural clusters.
✘ Members are conscripts and former slaves earning their freedom or career soldiers. They are heavily hazed, isolated and indoctrinated into the cult-like beliefs of the Hand, who heed their 'Brother' Narula religiously.
✘ Characters will be quickly taught the hand and verbal codes of the army and told to distrust 'weak' strangers.
✘ They find they are kept on the perpetual cusp of discomfort: offered clothes that are nearly too flimsy for the weather, rations that fall just a smidge short of satisfying hunger, rest hours that could be 30 minutes longer.
✘ Recruits that fail to meet their performance metrics in practice and assessments often... disappear.
CAITLYN
ASSIGNMENT
Disciplinarian — tasked to jot down every breach of conduct within the army across any of the Fingers where Caitlyn happens to bear witness. A sanctioned snitch, only capable of doling out minor punishments: sending soldiers to barracks, assigning them more exercise, depriving them of dinner. Some access to Narula, for emergencies. Curfews do not apply to her. Must produce regular reports.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
May note a sharper-than-expected difference in the level of training and natural obedience of fresh recruits and those who have been here even three months.
MARTY MCFLY
ASSIGNMENT
Inventory keeper — must make sure supplies of every kind are available at all times in the barracks, kitchens and Hives stations of the Hand. Access on any physical territory held by the Hand and ease of access in more unusual areas of Ephes to investigate the potential for new supplies. Can ask for an escort of up to four elite members of the Hand, if going anywhere shady.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
May note an unexpectedly quick turnaround in uniforms, weapons and opioids for a stationed force.
LUCY CARLYLE
ASSIGNMENT
Morale keeper — tasked with regularly visiting soldiers, particularly new recruits, and upkeeping their mental health. Must frequently talk to soldiers. Has discretion on what must be reported to the higher ups and must choose wisely on what to confide to disciplinarians. At the same time, must uncover soldiers who are a risk to themselves... and, above all, to their brothers or the Hives.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
May note new soldiers are increasingly listless, obedient and spiritually broken within six months of joining. Some of the new recruits confess their concerns over keeping up with the training regime, while others praise it and the might of the Hand. Many appear proud of their posts, taking on their membership to the Hand as their new identity.
AMERICA CHAVEZ
ASSIGNMENT
Mapmaker — freely allowed to roam all of Ephes and its surroundings, alone or with a guard escort of up to four soldiers. At times deployed to the Hives agricultural compounds. Must study the libraries and archives to learn mapmaking. Part of a small contingent of just five mapmakers. Not expected to participate in any kind of training.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
May note Brother Narula has particularly assigned mapmakers to investigate the lay of the land of old Ephes, prior to its incremental expansion, and its nearby whereabouts that have now become the periphery of the citadel.

XIE LIAN
ASSIGNMENT
Training instructor — expected to keep the forces of the Hand in tip-top shape. Can move across Fingers, but typically assigned to the Thumb. Delegated to train soldiers with tenure of over a year. Training programmes must be approved by Narula and are typically exceptionally spartan, setting out high performance metrics for running and weapons combat, as well as frequent trips in mountain, desert and forest areas to survive hard weather conditions. Xie Lian will not be deployed to the mountain and desert outposts, but may travel to the nearer by forest ones, if he so chooses.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
May note that, despite the immensely high expectations, soldiers typically rise to the occasion. The average one-year recruit is in incredibly good shape and has survived at least two instances of combat. Every one-year recruit claims to have killed numerous opponents.
LAN SIZHUI
ASSIGNMENT
Dispute settler — must intercede to keep peace between the brothers of the Hand, tasked to invoke Narula's authority or call in the man himself if circumstances get heated. Lan Sizhui himself is not to intervene or personally brute force in the event of brawls. Striking the dispute settler is a high-degree offence. Lan Sizhui may ask assistance from up to six members of the Hand to resolve conflict.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
May note that, for all unity is heavily drilled within brothers of the Hand, some soldiers with tenure of over a year develop high levels of arrogance and a sense of invulnerability. This at times puts them in conflict with other brothers who experience the same. The juggling act becomes soothing their tempers while managing their egos.
WEN NING
ASSIGNMENT
First-aid respondent — assigned to handle any injuries that soldiers suffer as a result of training, citadel engagements and internal strife. Not tasked with providing medical services on the field. Must also supply or administer the dose of opioid powders that Narula wants soldiers to take, presumably to keep their senses alert.
NOTES & OBSERVATIONS
May note that soldiers who have been part of the Hand for over a year are in incredibly robust health and the top of their physical condition. Soldiers who experience listlessness put it down as battle weariness, fatigue from the incredibly exhaustive training programme or the result of fasting to make their bodies battle-ready, lean (and mean).
