( They are surrounded by leaves, in such that any forest is a collection of its detritus. Crouching, he collects two handfuls, inclining his head to her respectfully, and bringing forth the leaves into a small, but potentially growing pile. )

He was haunted by a need to rescue you from the fate he believed you suffered in life. In death, he did not wish to remember anything less than that love.

( Which is true; it was the root of his anger, and how terrible it became, and those he killed and those he fought in the name of not remembering how he and his army died. )

He had looked toward and accepted his death at the time of our parting.

( Passed on, and from the accounts he heard after, without looking happy or pleased. Knowing what the soldiers have said, looking at the letter fragments... ah, but does one need to guess why? Neither of them were particularly wonderful soulmates. But that, perhaps, is what made that a version of true. )
