No worries! I'm happy to answer anything!

1. Correct! They're basically just dungeon mobs crossed with summons, if you're at all familiar with Final Fantasy. I'd say they're kind of like Pokemon, but they don't even have that much autonomy, heh - and it's Akira taking the damage, not them. The only "personalities" they have are basic types: happy, depressed, angry, that sort of thing, and that only comes into play if you have to try and negotiate with them to become one of Joker's masks.

An example of that is here. That is the most personality you ever see from the shadows (what they're called when you're fighting them in the dungeons), and you just have to pick the right answers to suit their personality type. They don't have any histories or anything of their own.

2. Of course! I can actually get you run-downs of their abilities and everything:
  • Arsene: Resists curse (which I'll call "necrotic" damage, if you're into D&D); weak to ice and bless (which I assume would be "radiant"). Can do physical or necrotic damage, boost Akira's gun skills, or slow down a target by lowering their agility or putting them to sleep.

  • Jack Frost: Resists ice damage; weak to fire. Can use ice attacks with a chance of freezing an enemy.

  • Matador: Resists wind attacks; weak to electricity. Can inflict psychic damage. Can also boost the agility of Akira's allies, which I would have present as him being able to give someone a boost of energy.

  • Anubis: Resists necrotic or radiant damage. Can do necrotic or radiant damage.

  • High Pixie: Resists electric or wind damage; weak to nuclear or gun attacks. Can do wind damage, as well as inflicting confusion or causing an enemy to go to sleep. Can also moderately restore the health of Akira's allies, which I would have present as low-level healing magic.

  • Hua Po: Resists fire damage; weak to ice and gun damage. Can do fire damage with a chance to cause burns to the enemy; can also put an enemy to sleep; can also lower an enemy's attack, which I would have present as causing the attacker to feel weaker, maybe?

I hope this helps! Just let me know if I can answer anything else!

I also should have included that there is an "SP"/magic power stat in the game, where using their abilities costs Joker SP, so he could only do so much before he would need to rest and recover it.
