ABILITIES | POWERS: Being a catgirl. This includes heightened strength (seriously she’s kind of absurdly strong), speed, agility and reflexes. She’s a formidable climber and basically one step below a gecko. Her sense of smell and hearing are very strong as well. Also, kitty’s got claws. Claws that can cut through steel if needed. Will occasionally walk/run on all fours.
When it comes to intellectual skills, Catra is an adept strategist, said to have increased the Horde’s productivity by a whopping 400% one time.
PERSONALITY: So, you know this meme? Yeah, that’s Catra. Okay, personality section done, everybody go home – I’m kidding, I’m kidding.
Catra is the enfant terrible of the show. She’s rude, she’s mean, and she’s not afraid to fight dirty. Why yes, she will absolutely pretend to be hurt so you underestimate her just to strike at the most opportune moment, and you’ll be like, damn you Catra. She will do anything to obtain power. For most of her life, she’s felt extremely powerless and now she’s of the opinion it’s her time to shine. Which means that she’s also a bit of a petty bully who enjoys beating others into submission, either verbally or physically, and likes to blame everyone else for her problems and take out her frustrations on the people or objects around her. On the flipside, she is an adept manipulator and not above even using someone’s affection for her to her advantage.
But it’s never quite so easy, is it? As you may perhaps have guessed, beneath the rough exterior, Catra hides a very tender heart. She’s been hurt many times in her life, having received her first death threat from her caregiver, Shadow Weaver, when she was but a small child; and it is safe to assume that that wasn’t the last time she received such treatment. Much of her behavior can also be explained by her dynamic with Adora, her best friend since early childhood (and also protagonist of the series, wouldn’t you know). Both of them were raised as child soldiers in the Horde, though it seems they have been given special attention by Shadow Weaver specifically. And, well, Adora was clearly the favorite, receiving preferential treatment and much less harsh punishment even when they were in trouble together. Naturally, this built resentment, as well as a kind of codependency with Adora. See, Adora, good-natured as she is, tried her best to stand up for Catra, though of course that didn’t exactly spare Catra from Shadow Weaver’s abuse. This means Catra grew up feeling incredibly powerless and dependent on Adora’s goodwill for survival. Add to that that the same dynamic replicated in their cadet group and you’ve got a storm coming.
Despite all this, Catra’s always retained a bit of a rebellious streak. She likes getting into all kinds of mischief if she feels she can at all get away with it – or, you know, she will just straight-up backtalk to and insult her superiors. She’s impulsive and mercurial, yet does not always voice her problems clearly, especially when it requires actual vulnerability of some sort. Because, oh, if there’s anything she hates, it’s being vulnerable. Y’know, showing her actual, real emotions. The squishy ones. Those are under lock and key, if she can at all help it. Which she cannot always, for she is, in a way, quite sensitive and actually quite desperate for connection, affection and approval. As the series goes on, she’s seen going to great lengths just to hear something even vaguely in the vicinity of “nice” from Shadow Weaver or Hordak, her parental figure and superior, respectively.
It’s not all negatives, though! For one thing, if Catra considers you a friend, she will be very loyal in her own way; such as when Adora wanted to go back to the Whispering Woods and Catra was immediately ready to go with her, no questions asked. Of course, Adora went alone and things backfired quite a bit. There are some moments where she does what she can to protect others without asking for anything in return, or even acknowledging it.
So the trouble is, Catra doesn’t want any friends. After losing her only friend to the other side of the war, she’s pretty much sworn off friendship altogether. Scorpia, who is first her superior officer but quickly becomes her loyal henchwoman, tries very hard, but Catra never quite lets her in. It becomes a strange dynamic, wherein Catra mostly uses Scorpia and her affection, but also sometimes seems like she wants to try being more genuine. Alas, those attempts are generally quickly squashed, because there’s always something to set Catra back and make her regress into her worst behaviors.
At the point I’m taking her from, she hasn’t quite hit rock bottom yet, but is steadily careening toward it. She’s been sent to the Crimson Waste, a place purported to mean certain death, but instead turned around and overtook the criminal gangs of the place. In a way, she’s having a great time! This will be short-lived, but for now, I’m deciding to have her enter the game on a high note.
And for added cuteness, she’s a catgirl with an unusually broad array of feline traits, such as purring, hissing and growling, grooming herself when upset, curling up at a loved person’s feet in bed, and absolutely loathing water.
