Canon updates can only really happen when plot developments allow characters access to one of the travel beacons to other worlds — which should be about once an Arc. But this will also depend on whether the group doesn't, say, blow up beacons or the chance to reach them.

I'd encourage you to apply from a canon point you're most comfortable with and not count on updates — I do think there will be scope for them to take place, but just in case they can't in the short term.
